Bloggers: The new Sheriff in town

Howard Kurz in the Washington Post has the story of citizen journalist and blogger Mayhill Fowler who scooped the mainstream media with both Obama's "bitter" comments and Bill Clinton's comments on the Vanity Fair piece. Good for her at getting at the truth of some of these politicians runnoing for office. Here are some of the money quotes:

"Fowler is part of a new breed -- citizen journalist, liberal advocate, agent provocateur -- and her success has stirred questions about her methods."

How dare she get at the unvarnished truth instead of the sugar coated pundent filled one that the mainstream media provides. Stand back MSM there is a new sheriff in town.

"She is one of 2,500 people, from writers to academics to accountants, working with Off the Bus, a $200,000 venture launched by the Huffington Post and New Assignment, the brainchild of New York University journalism professor Jay Rosen. The idea is to unleash ordinary folks on the presidential campaign and give them a technology-powered megaphone"

The mainstream media journalists and editors had better understand they do not have a monopoly on the truth or are not the final word on what is news.

Speaking of journalism.

The Washington Post has an interesting article on a woman named Faye Anderson and who is a blogger and Citizen Journalist. It's an interesting article about the rise of blogs like this one and many others offering critiques, rebuttals and original reporting beyond the what the mainstream media provides or does not cover. It explores this brave new world of information. Here is one of the money quotes:
"It's not you, the journalist, it's the institution," Ms. CJ tells Mr. MSM. "You're not telling the whole story. . . . You've lost your credibility."

Ms. Anderson reacts in her blog to the Washington Post story about her and those of us who labor in front of the keyboard for no pay other than trying to find the truth and bring it out into the light so others can see it.

Well, actually the more like the Washington Post which had a front page article on a guy in Virgina named Greg Letiecq, and his blog Black Velvet Bruce Li. Good to see the mainstream media actually starting to notice the power of bloggers to influence the political discussion. Of course the Washington Post can not resist a little editorial bias calling Letiecq a "bigot" at the same time calling a group called Mexicans Without Borders an "immigrant rights group". But, that's why there is blogging to point out the bias in "reporting" by the mainstream media.

The Washington Post has an article on left wing bloggers attacking moderate Democrats like Rep. Ellen O. Tauscher in California because they feel she is not strong enough against the war for their left wing agenda. It is amazing to me how such left wing Democrats can turn on moderates of their own party like Representative Tauscher and in the process will probably help Republicans in 2008 by destroying such moderate Democrats. It's one thing to be against the war it's another thing to help hand ammunition to the Republicans. But, the Dems have their crazy ideologues as the Republicans have to deal with theirs. The important thing for the rest of us is to make sure these crazies of both parties don't destroy the people on the middle ground where the common sense lies.
